Balloon cells

Balloon Cells in Dermis        See DX Path for details of the conditions below

In skin disease we usually see them as balloon cell nevi or balloon cell melanoma but they can be mimicked by foamy macrophages or metastatic renal carcinoma cells.

Sometimes xanthoma cells and histiocytes in Rosai- Dorfman disease can also mimic balloon cells.

Mucin filled cells may also look balloon like.
